It would be interesting to see what other teachers in your school (not math teachers) do with the problem. I wonder if the way we approach the problem is impacted by whether or not we are currently in a math class.
]]>I love this model as a way to encourage public conversation about problem solving. It would be great to get the whole school on board and make this a part of the culture. This is more difficult as the size of the school increases. At a PEA summer workshop years ago I met a teacher whose school had developed a long series of problems that ran through their curriculum. He called them ‘Goat on a Rope’ problems and they involved ever more complicated scenarios with increasingly sophisticated ways of thinking of distance. They are lovely problems and might give insight into a way to further develop such ideas. This is one of the goals on the back burner of my mind for my department.
